FAQ's

1.

I really want to sign up for one of your workshops, how do I enrol?

Simply send us an email! We take all our bookings via email, this allows us to let you know any extra information and answer Q's you might have.

2.

Where are your workshops held?

All our workshops + courses are held in our Canberra studio/workshop (currently located in Mitchell ACT 2911). It's a fully equipped silversmithing studio with the tools you will need for your workshop. Once you've enrolled we will send you an info pack with all the details for your workshop, studio address and other useful info!

3.

Can I visit the studio?

Yes of course! It's no problems to arrange a studio visit before enrolling. We're only open by appointment so send us an email and we can tee up a time that suits us both.

4.

Will your six week jewellery course teach me everything I need to know?

No. Like anything, it takes time, time and more time combined with lots of practice to learn something new. Jewellery is a large and widely varied field, it can take many years to master individual techniques. We aim to give you an over view of some basic jewellery making skills, which are wonderful foundation skills to have and to continue to build on. This includes, soldering, filing, forming, finishing techniques, riveting and more. Please don't hesitate to get in touch if there's something in particular you would like to learn and we can let you know which workshop would suit you best.

5.

I missed out on signing up for a workshop! Will there be more?

Yes, you're in luck! We run workshops throughout the year. Our workshops are quite popular and sometimes they do book out very quickly. This is especially true with our six week jewellery course. We run the six week jewellery course as a continuing course. This means all current students get the first opportunity to re-enrol, all avaliable places after this are sent out via the mailing list. It is often the case that there are no available places for several months due to full re-enrolment.

We are working to be able to offer more six week jewellery classes. Please know that currently Alison teaches all workshops herself in addition to running her own full time business [www.alisonjackson.com.au] - and, there is only 24 hours in a day!  But it's top of our to-do list, we'll send out details of new courses via the mailing list.

6.

What do I need to bring to the first class?

Once your enrolment and payment has been processed, you'll receive an information pack with all the details you need to know - including; studio location, facilities, what to bring to the first class and what to wear. Of course, if you have any more Q's - just send us an email!

7.

What do I wear to class?

All these details will be in your information pack, emailed to you when you enrol in a workshop. But here's a quick run down for you. Covered shoes are essential in all workshops, this is for your own safety. Wear clothes you don't mind getting a little grubby. We aren't the fashion police - we recommend comfort over style, we're all here to have a good time making! We also have aprons available to borrow during the workshops.

8.

I want to enrol but will miss one of the workshop days. Can I still enrol?

Please get in touch to discuss this with us. Some of our classes (eg: six week jewellery class) are a little more flexible if you miss a class. However, our shorter classes run on a more structured schedule and so we advise against this - we don't want you to miss out any important steps and information from a class.

For more info on this, please get in touch. You can also read through out cancellation policy listed at point #11 below. Please note, we do no offer make up classes for missed class.

9.

Do you have gift certificates?

Currently we don't offer gift certificates due to our enrolment process (we don't want anyone having to wait months and months for a place!). We hope we'll be able to in the future. However, please get in touch to see which classes are upcoming and have availability and we can see what's possible.

10.

Who teaches the classes?

Alison Jackson, the founder of Pocket Studio currently teaches all classes. Alison studied Gold & Silversmithing at the ANU School of Art, graduating with honours and completing an exchange semester at the University of Applied Sciences Jewellery & Gemstone Design in Idar-Oberstien, Germany.

Alison combines experience with strong technical skills, creative vision and a passion for making. Her own practice spans across jewellery, tableware and large scale creative installations. She has a love of the traditional craft of Silversmithing and explores this through her limited edition and exhibition work. Alison has exhibited nationally and internationally and has won a number of awards. Most recently she was the recipient of a 2016 Australia Council Grant and in 2015, Alison had a significant body of work acquired by Canberra Museum and Gallery for their permanent collection.

You can see more of Alison's work and learn about her practice here - www.alisonjackson.com.au

11.

What's your cancellation policy?

Any cancellation after payment is received will incur a $100 fee, the remaining course fee will be refunded within 7 days. Full refunds will only be given if a class is cancelled or place is no longer available. No deductions, refunds or make-up classes are available to students who miss classes. In the event a single class needs to be cancelled, a make-up class will be organised for the week following the last scheduled class.
